The Most Common Health Issues in Rabbits and How to Prevent Them

Rabbits are generally very healthy animals and when cared for properly they can have a long and happy life. However, there are some health issues that can occur in rabbits, which is why it’s important to understand what these are so you can ensure your rabbit stays healthy.

The most common health issues in rabbits are ear mites, dental disease, digestive problems, fly strike and urinary tract infections. Let’s take a closer look at each of these health issues and how to prevent them.

Ear Mites: Ear mites are tiny parasites that live in the ears of rabbits. They can cause irritation and pain in the ears, as well as an unpleasant smell. The best way to prevent ear mites is to keep your rabbit’s environment clean and dry, and to regularly check for signs of infection. If you do find signs of infection, it’s important to take your rabbit to the vet for treatment as soon as possible.

Dental Disease: Rabbits have continuously growing teeth and if they don’t wear them down properly through chewing they can become overgrown and cause pain and difficulty eating. To prevent dental disease, make sure your rabbit has access to hay and chew toys so they can keep their teeth worn down. Additionally, keep an eye on your rabbit’s teeth for any signs of infection or overgrowth and take them to the vet if necessary.

Digestive Problems: Rabbits have sensitive stomachs and can easily get sick if they eat something they shouldn’t or if their diet isn’t balanced correctly. To prevent digestive problems, make sure your rabbit is eating a balanced diet that consists of hay, fresh vegetables, small amounts of fruit, pellets, and occasional treats. Additionally, don’t feed your rabbit foods that can be dangerous such as chocolate or onions.

Fly Strike: Fly strike is a condition caused by flies laying eggs in the fur or skin of a rabbit which then hatch into maggots that burrow into the skin causing infection, pain and discomfort. To prevent fly strike make sure you check your rabbit regularly for any signs of fly eggs or maggots, especially during hot weather when flies are more active. Additionally, keep your rabbit’s environment clean so there is no food or waste lying around that would attract flies.

Urinary Tract Infections: Urinary tract infections are usually caused by a bacterial infection in the bladder or urethra that causes pain when urinating and an increased need to urinate. To prevent urinary tract infections make sure your rabbit has access to plenty of fresh water throughout the day, a balanced diet with plenty of hay to keep them hydrated, a clean environment with no urine-soaked bedding or litter tray, and regular vet checkups.

By following these tips you can help ensure your rabbit stays healthy and happy for years to come! If you ever have any concerns about your rabbit’s health be sure to take them to the vet for a checkup as soon as possible.
